Legal Maxims Part 2

1. Alibi –  It means elsewhere.

Explanation:  An accused person can take the defense under section 11 of the Indian Evidence Act that he was not present at the time of the commission of crime.

2. Amicus Curiae –  Friend of the Court .

Explanation: The person who helps the Court in any legal matter.

3. Audi alteram partem – Listen to both sides before deciding.

Explanation: In any legal dispute Court must give a decision after listening to both parties.

4. Caveat – Warning to not do something without telling a specific person.

Explanation:  if a person has a reasonable apprehension that any person can bring legal action against him so he lodges a Caveat in the Court , now it is the duty of the Court to give legal notice to the person who has lodge Caveat before taking any legal action against him.

5. Caveat emptor – Buyer, beware .Explanation: When you buy something, it’s up to you to check if it’s good.
