Summary of Today’s News

SC terms bulldozing of 6 houses in U.P. unlawful.

The Supreme Court ruled that the 2021 demolition of six homes by the Prayagraj Development Authority was “inhumane and illegal,” violating the fundamental right to shelter. A Bench led by Justice A.S. Oka ordered ₹10 lakh compensation for each affected homeowner. Authorities failed to follow due process, improperly serving show-cause notices. Opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav and Congress’s Shahnawaz Alam, condemned the action, calling for stricter regulations to prevent such government excesses in the future.

India’s educational transformation — the true picture.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 modernizes India’s outdated education system, neglected since 1986. Past issues included corruption, political interference, and distorted history. NEP 2020, built on access, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability, has boosted enrolment among SC, ST, OBC, and Muslim women. Government investment increased, enhancing infrastructure, skill-based learning, and research. Indian languages are promoted, and reservation reforms ensure fair hiring. NEP 2020 fosters innovation, decolonizes education, and prepares India’s youth for a technology-driven future, aiming for a developed nation.

Why India needs to clean its air.

India’s air pollution crisis is a year-round emergency, impacting health and daily life. Despite initiatives like NCAP and Bharat VI norms, progress remains slow. Pollution is tied to governance, demographics, and economic systems. India aims to cut PM2.5 by 40% by 2026 but lacks sufficient funding and data-driven strategies. Learning from global examples, India must prioritize systemic reforms, strengthen local capacities, and focus on actionable policies over superficial high-tech solutions for lasting air quality improvements.

House panel suggests raising creamy layer limit from ₹8 lakh.

A parliamentary committee recommended raising the OBC creamy layer income limit beyond ₹8 lakh, set in 2017, to ensure broader reservation benefits. It urged transparency in job quota data, advising the government to make OBC representation details publicly accessible. Concerns arose over the omission of quota data in DoPT’s 2023-24 report. The committee also called for a uniform method to calculate creamy layer income across states for consistency in reservation policies.
