Summary of Today’s News

Don’t make appeal on basis of caste, religion, EC tells parties

  • Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha election, the Election Commission (EC) has directed political parties and their star campaigners,
    • to maintain decorum while campaigning
    • They must refrain from making appeals on the basis of
    • caste or
    • communal politics or
    • make false statements,
  • which can mislead voters.
  • EC cited previous examples of such indirect violations using known methodologies to avoid actions under the model code of conduct (MCC),
  • EC said that “stern action would be taken against direct or indirect MCC violations”.
  • The MCC comes into effect with the announcement of the poll dates.
  • No one should attempt any activity which may aggravate existing differences or create mutual hatred or cause tension between different castes or communities, religious and linguistic groups.
  • It said that no aspect of the private life, not connected with the public activities, of the leaders or workers of other parties is to be criticised.
  • It also warned the parties against giving advertisements masquerading as news items in the media.

Cabinet approves three more semiconductor units

  • The approved semiconductor units are Semiconductor Fabrication:-
  • In Dholera (Gujarat), in partnership with companies from Taiwan
  • Semiconductor ATMP (assembly, testing, marking, and packaging): in Morigaon (Assam).

Key Points

  • Semiconductors, also referred as integrated circuits (IC), are materials with characteristics intermediate between a “conductor” that conducts electricity like metal and an “insulator” through which electricity hardly flows.
  • Semiconductors are found in almost all the electronics devices and play a pivotal role in emerging technologies like AI, 5G, IoT, etc.
  • United States (US),Taiwan, and China are considered as semiconductor powerhouses.

International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)

  • Headquarters in India
  • Commemorating 50th year of Project Tiger, IBCA was launched in April 2023.
  • Aim is to Strengthen global cooperation for the conservation of seven big cat species (tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma) and their habitats.

Cabinet approves PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

Key Points about the Scheme:

  • Under Which Ministry: Ministry of New & Renewable Energy.
  • What is the Aim/Purpose: Installing rooftop solar (RTS) and providing free electricity for up to 300 monthly units for 1 Crore households.
  • Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for Residential RTS up to:
  • 30,000/- per kW up to 2 kW
  • 18,000/- per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW
  • Rs 78,000 for systems larger than 3 kW
  • Households can access collateral-free low-interest loan products of around 7% for installation of RTS systems up to 3 kW.
  • National Portal will facilitate the households:
    • To apply for subsidies and select a suitable vendor for installing rooftop solar.
  • In decision-making, by providing relevant information such as appropriate system sizes, benefits calculators, vendor ratings, etc.
  • Model Solar Village: One village will be developed in each district to act as a role model for the adoption of RTS in rural areas.
  • The government aims to add 30 GW of solar capacity through RTS in residential sector.
