Delhi may turn into desert if deforestation is not checked: HC

• The High Court warned that Delhi could become a “barren desert” if deforestation continues unchecked, emphasizing the urgency by citing the recent extreme temperatures, including a disputed record of 52.9 degrees Celsius.
• The court highlighted the necessity of providing adequate infrastructure and support for the committee chairperson overseeing forest protection to effectively address the issue.

Baby trafficking in India.

• The recent bust of an inter-State baby smuggling racket by the Telangana police highlights the socio-economic factors driving such criminal activities.
• This racket involved trafficking babies from Delhi and Pune to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, driven by the desperation of impoverished parents and the impatience of childless couples facing long legal adoption wait times.
•The operation spanned several states, with babies sold for up to ₹5.50 lakh. To prevent such incidents, the government must implement effective poverty alleviation programs, create employment opportunities, streamline the adoption process, raise awareness about legal adoption, and enhance policing.
