Summary of Today’s News

General Election Results 2024

BJP led NDA got the numbers for majority to form government own its own. After 1962 it is first time that a sitting Prime Minister will get the 3rd term as the PM. There have been only Jawaharlal Nehru who became PM three times.
• Election Results: BJP-led NDA won 292 seats, BJP itself fell 32 seats short of a majority. Congress-led INDIA bloc secured 234 seats, with Congress winning 99 seats.
• Regional Outcomes: BJP saw losses in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, marginal gains in the south, and a significant victory in Odisha. Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance succeeded in Uttar Pradesh, while Congress-RJD struggled in Bihar.
• Modi’s Response: Modi praised the Election Commission, acknowledged women voters, and recognized the importance of allies TDP and JD(U) for NDA’s performance.
• Congress Reaction: Rahul Gandhi claimed the country opposed Modi’s leadership. Congress’s gains enable it to hold the Leader of the Opposition post.
• Political Implications: The results indicate a return to coalition politics, necessitating a more consensual approach for the BJP. Meetings of both the NDA and INDIA blocs are scheduled to strategize further.
Modi’s address also highlighted continued commitment to SC/ST welfare and hinted at reconciliation with former ally Shiv Sena.

The King Makers in Lok Sabha election 2024

In the current political landscape, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) play crucial roles in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with their combined 28 seats. Key points:
• Crucial Allies: TDP and JD(U) are pivotal for the NDA’s majority, reaffirming their support and planning to attend the NDA meeting.
• INDIA Bloc’s Efforts: Despite being 40 seats short, the INDIA bloc is attempting to win over these key allies.
• Acknowledgements and Reactions: Prime Minister Modi credited both Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu for their contributions to the NDA’s success in Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. Naidu expressed gratitude for Andhra Pradesh’s support, whereas Kumar remained publicly silent and avoided meeting the Bihar BJP president.
These dynamics underscore the delicate balance within the NDA and the strategic importance of maintaining strong alliances.

The combined forces of AAP and Congress failed to defeat BJP

The voters in Delhi proved to be very smart while electing the government of the country and voted BJP to be in power while the same voters elected AAP in Legislative Assembly Elections.
• BJP Victory: BJP won all Delhi seats, with a reduced vote share from 56.7% in 2019 to 54.35% in 2024.
• AAP and Congress Performance: AAP received 24.17% vote share, Congress 18.91%. Despite their alliance, they failed to defeat BJP.
• Campaign Dynamics: BJP’s campaign focused on its central government achievements and portrayed AAP as corrupt. Criticisms of Modi as a dictator and alliance contradictions between Congress and AAP in Punjab further harmed their credibility.
• Strategic Moves: BJP replaced six sitting MPs to counter anti-incumbency, successfully betting on new candidates.
• AAP’s National Effort: AAP’s first national Lok Sabha bid fell short, and the lack of joint rallies and significant events weakened the INDIA bloc’s image of unity.
Overall, the BJP’s strategic campaigning and candidate selection, combined with the ineffective AAP-Congress alliance, secured their victory in Delhi.

The results of general elections and the share market

India’s S&P BSE Sensex experienced its steepest drop since March 2020, plummeting 5.7% due to the unexpected outcome of the BJP not securing a majority in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Key points:
• Market Reaction: Sensex fell 4,390 points, wiping out gains from the last four months, with major losses in state-owned and blue-chip stocks.
• Major Losers: NTPC (-15.5%), State Bank (-14.4%), L&T (-12.7%), Power Grid (-12.4%), Tata Steel (-8.87%), IndusInd Bank (-9%), and Reliance (-7.5%).
• NSE Nifty Impact: Nifty-50 dropped 5.93%, led by declines in Adani Group and PSU stocks. Significant drops included Adani Ports (-21%) and Adani Enterprises (-19.7%).
• Market Sentiment: Investors expected a decisive BJP victory, leading to rich valuations. The prospect of a coalition government raised fears of policy paralysis and uncertainty, triggering continued profit booking.

Israel mourns the killings of its hostages by Hamas.

Israel mourned the death of four hostages in Gaza as the international community, led by U.S. President Joe Biden, supported a proposed truce deal. Key points:
• Truce Proposal: U.S. President Biden outlined a three-phase plan to halt fighting for six weeks, exchange hostages for Palestinian prisoners, and rebuild Gaza.
• International Support: The plan was endorsed by the Group of Seven (G7) and regional governments. A draft UN Security Council resolution backed the deal and urged Hamas to comply.
• Israeli Stance: Prime Minister Netanyahu agreed to a temporary ceasefire for hostage release but reiterated the goal to destroy Hamas.
• Ongoing Conflict: Despite the truce proposal, fighting continued with Israeli strikes and ground combat in Gaza, leading to further civilian casualties.
The White House emphasized the plan as Israel’s own initiative, crafted with significant diplomatic efforts. Hamas initially responded positively but has not officially commented further.
