Summary of Today’s News

Shallow Fakes

• The influx of shallow fakes on social media is increasing every day.
• Shallow fakes or cheap fakes are pictures, videos and voice clips created without the help of AI technology but by either editing or by using other simple software tools.
• Shallow fake videos are manually altered or selectively edited.
• They can be created easily, in some cases it can be just a clipped video being shared without any context.

Difference between Shallow Fakes and Deep Fakes

Deep Fakes	Shallow fakes
Deep Fakes refer to images, videos, and audio that are created or altered with artificial intelligence to achieve photorealistic and audio-realistic results, often intended to deceive.	Shallow fakes or cheap fakes are made with existing technologies—for example a conventional edit on a photo, or slowing-down a video to change the speech patterns of an individual, or more often rely on mis-captioning or mis-contextualising an existing image or video, claiming it is from a time or place which it is not from.

Commonwealth Games

• Singapore has denied hosting the commonwealth games (CWG) of 2026.
• CWG takes place every four year.

Government to register parents’ religion to register births

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has drafted Model Rules requiring parents to separately record their religion when registering a child’s birth. These rules need to be adopted and notified by state governments before implementation.
Previously, only the family’s religion was noted in birth registers, but the proposed changes expand the form to include the religion of both parents. Similar adjustments are made for adopted children. Under the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act of 2023, the national birth and death database will be created and used to update various official documents.
All births and deaths must now be digitally registered through the Civil Registration System portal. Digital birth certificates issued will serve as proof of birth for services like school admissions.
The Registrar General of India proposes replacing existing forms related to birth, death, stillbirth, adoption, and medical certificates with new ones, which will include a history of illness for deaths in addition to the cause of death.

How are symbols allotted to political parties?

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) that secured 1.09% and 0.99% votes in 2019 and 2021 has been denied a common symbol (Pot). The VCK was declined allotment of a common symbol as it had failed to secure 1% of votes polled in the elections to the State Legislative Assembly in 2021. Rule 10B of the Symbols Order provides that the concession of a common free symbol shall be available to a ‘registered unrecognised party’ for two general elections.
