Summary of Today’s News

RBI keeps Repo Rates on hold due to high food prices

Despite a moderation in overall inflation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) remains concerned about the spike in food prices. On Friday, the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee opted to maintain the policy repo rate unchanged at 6.50% under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF). This marks the seventh consecutive time the rates have remained unchanged.
At a post-meeting press conference, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das emphasized the Monetary Policy Committee’s commitment to achieving the inflation target consistently. While acknowledging progress in disinflation, he highlighted that the task is not yet complete.”

India abstains from UNHRC vote regarding Israel-Hamas war

On Friday, India chose to abstain from a United Nations Human Rights Council resolution urging Israel to immediately cease fire in Gaza and implement an arms embargo, which was approved by the 47-member Council.
India’s abstention, consistent with past votes on Human Rights Council resolutions emphasizing “accountability,” contrasts with its support for three other resolutions condemning Israel for human rights violations against Palestinians, its occupation of Syrian Golan, and advocating for Palestinian self-determination.

UNHRC tells nations to stop shipping arms to Israel

On Friday, the United Nations’ primary human rights body passed a resolution urging nations to halt the sale or shipment of weapons to Israel. The aim is to mitigate rights violations against Palestinians during Israel’s intense military operations in Gaza. The resolution received 28 votes in favor, with 6 against and 13 abstentions from the 47-member Human Rights Council.
Although non-binding, the resolution is expected to amplify international pressure on Israel, reflecting global unease over its military operations in Gaza. These operations were initiated following attacks by armed militants in Israel on October 7, resulting in the deaths of nearly 33,000 Palestinians. Western nations displayed division, with the U.S. and Germany opposing the resolution, France and Japan abstaining, and Belgium, Finland, and Luxembourg voting in favor.

India leads the chart in anti doping tests

India maintains its regrettable position as one of the prominent nations with doping offenders. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recently released 2022 statistics revealing that out of 3865 samples processed by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), 125 (3.2%) tested positive, the highest among all countries.
Russian (10186 samples) and American (6782) agencies have reported 85 and 84 positive results respectively.
NADA’s figures also record the highest percentage of positive results for 2000-plus samples tested by an agency and joint highest for 1000-plus samples. The South African agency has 2.9 % (2033 samples) and the Vietnamese agency has 3.2 % (1105 samples) of positive tests.
