Summary of Today’s News

NHRC seeks report on ‘sale of girls’ as part of Nata Pratha

• The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for the eradication and abolition of the Nata Pratha practice in some communities in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, where girls are sold for illegal or child marriages.
• The NHRC has directed these states to submit a report on measures taken or proposed within eight weeks.
• This decision follows an investigation into a complaint where a minor girl was sold and subsequently found dead after being subjected to this practice.
• The NHRC suggests prosecuting individuals involved in Nata Pratha under human trafficking laws and the POCSO Act.

Interfaith marriage versus personal laws and special laws.

• The Madhya Pradesh High Court’s judgment, which declined to protect an inter-faith couple seeking to marry under the Special Marriage Act (SMA) on the grounds of Muslim personal law, reflects a significant legal misunderstanding.
• The court’s reliance on Muslim law to assess the validity of a marriage under the SMA is irrelevant and inappropriate, as the SMA is designed to facilitate inter-faith marriages without religious rituals.
• This ruling undermines the purpose of the SMA, threatens the implementation of a uniform civil code, and wrongly imposes religious personal law on secular marriages.
• Allowing such judgments to stand would effectively invalidate the SMA and compel individuals to convert for marriage purposes.

Voter turnout in General Elections 2024

• The 2024 Lok Sabha election saw a voter turnout of 65.79%, a slight decrease from the 67.4% turnout in 2019. The final figures might change as they do not yet include postal ballots. Lakshadweep recorded the highest turnout at 84%, while Bihar had the lowest at 56.19%.
• The overall turnout for the seventh phase was 63.88%. The Election Commission has submitted the list of elected MPs to President Droupadi Murmu, starting the formal process to constitute the 18th Lok Sabha. Narendra Modi is set to take oath on June 9 for a third consecutive term following the BJP-led NDA’s majority win.

New members in UNSC

Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia were chosen to join the U.N. Security Council in a secret vote held by the General Assembly on Thursday. The 193 countries in the General Assembly picked these five countries to serve on the council for two years. Their terms will begin on January 1.
