Summary of Today’s News
Rail Accident in West Bengal, killed 9 people.
• A tragic train accident occurred in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, resulting in nine fatalities, including two railway crew members, and injuries to 41 others. The collision happened when a goods train, allegedly disregarding signals, crashed into the stationary Kanchanjunga Express.
• Four coaches of the express and five wagons of the goods train derailed, complicating rescue efforts. Officials cited human error and inadequate safety measures as contributing factors.
• The incident has prompted calls for improved safety technologies, including the Kavach anti-collision system. Compensation was announced for the victims’ families and the injured.
High Level meeting by Home Minister on Manipur violence
• Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting, excluding Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, to address the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur. Shah emphasized the need for a coordinated approach and announced plans to engage both Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities to bridge the divide.
• The Union government is actively supporting state security, and fresh violence in Jiribam district has prompted increased deployment of Central forces. Shah called for strict legal action against violence perpetrators and strategic placement of forces to restore peace.
• Key officials, including Security Adviser Kuldiep Singh and Army leaders, attended the meeting.
Ukraine Peace Conference
• The two-day “Summit on Peace” in Burgenstock concluded with mixed results. While Switzerland successfully gathered over 90 countries, the final communiqué, condemning Russia’s war in Ukraine and advocating for sovereignty and international law, was signed by 82 nations. However, India’s notable absence from the signatories, along with no BRICS member support and China’s lack of representation, highlighted the event’s limitations.
• Despite attempts to court India, including a last-minute appeal by Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, India’s consistent neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict influenced its decision to attend but not endorse the summit’s outcome.
• This reflects India’s stance for a more inclusive peace process involving both Russia and Ukraine.
