Summary of Today’s News
Tempering of EVM is impossible Election Commission tells Supreme Court
The Election Commission declared that electronic voting machines (EVMs) cannot be tampered with at any point, as the Supreme Court reserved judgment on petitions advocating for a more transparent electoral system for the country’s 97 crore registered voters, regardless of EVMs. The assurance of EVM perfection came just before the Lok Sabha election’s first phase.
During a two-day hearing, suggestions like reverting to paper ballots and implementing bar codes for candidates were discussed. Petitioners emphasized voters’ fundamental right to verify their votes. The court considered petitions seeking 100% cross-verification of EVM votes with VVPAT paper slips, currently only done in five randomly chosen polling booths per constituency.
ED tells Arvind Kejriwal eating sweets to get bail on health grounds,
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleged in court on Thursday that despite having type 2 diabetes, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal consumes sugary items like mangoes and sweets daily, purportedly to raise his blood sugar levels and potentially seek medical bail or hospital transfer. Kejriwal, currently in Tihar Jail, has been permitted by the court to eat home-cooked food due to his condition. AAP criticized the “BJP-ED” alliance, accusing them of attempting to harm Kejriwal.
The ED made its claim in response to Kejriwal’s request for video conferencing with his regular doctor. The court has requested a diet chart from Tihar. AAP’s Atishi stated that Kejriwal requires insulin daily and accused the ED and BJP of conspiring against him. The Lieutenant-Governor has ordered a report from the Director General of Prisons within 24 hours.

Volcanic blasts in Mount Ruang in Indonesia
On Thursday, Indonesian rescuers rushed to evacuate thousands of people as Mount Ruang erupted five times, prompting the closure of a nearby airport and a warning of potential tsunamis from falling debris.
The volcano, located on a remote island in Indonesia’s outermost region, spewed lava and ash columns more than a mile high, leading to the highest alert level being raised. Residents, including fisherman Taka, assisted in evacuations by boat.
As of Thursday morning, the volcano continued to emit smoke up to 800 meters high, causing damage to houses on the neighboring island of Tagulandang. Rescuers reported volcanic material covering roads in Tagulandang, prompting urgent evacuation efforts for over 11,000 residents.
A prison on Tagulandang island was evacuated, with inmates, officials, and residents transferred by boat. Authorities also issued a tsunami warning due to the eruption.
Indonesia, situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” faces frequent seismic and volcanic events due to tectonic plate movements across the region.
