o UNGA resolutions are not legally binding but reflect world opinion.
Diminished support for Ukraine
o The Ukrainian resolution passed with 93 votes in favor, 18 against, and 65 abstentions.
o This is a lower number compared to previous votes, which had over 140 nations condemning Russia.
U.S. pressure on Ukraine
o The U.S. tried to convince Ukraine to withdraw its resolution in favor of the U.S. proposal.

Recently, farmers protesting at the Punjab and Haryana borders are observed February 23 as Pagri Sambhal Diwas, in honour of Ajit Singh, paternal uncle of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

Background of Pagri Sambhal Diwas
o Initiated by Ajit Singh in 1907 to protest against three agricultural laws imposed by the British.
Meaning of ‘Pagri Sambhal Jatta’
o Literally translates to ‘take care of your turban, o farmer’, symbolizing self-respect and honor.
Origin of the slogan
o Coined by Banke Dayal, a nationalist poet, it became a symbol of resistance.
Three agricultural laws protested
1. The Punjab Land Alienation Act, 1900
 Restricted farmers’ rights to sell or mortgage land freely, favoring moneylenders and landlords.
2. The Punjab Land Colonisation Act, 1906
 Gave the British control over land in the newly developed Chenab Colony (now in Pakistan), forcing farmers to transfer land to the British government after death.
3. The Doab Bari Act, 1907
 Took away farmers’ ownership rights, reducing them to contract workers.
 British raised taxes on agricultural land and irrigation water, leading to increased financial burdens on farmers.
• Formation of the Bharat Mata Society
o Ajit Singh and Kishan Singh (Bhagat Singh’s father) formed this revolutionary group for farmers.
• Support from other leaders
o Lala Lajpat Rai and others also supported the movement.
• Impact of the Pagri Sambhal Movement
o One of the first major farmer movements against British rule in Punjab, laying the foundation for future resistance.
o Led to mass protests and civil disobedience, pressuring the British to withdraw some oppressive clauses of the laws.
