Summary of Today’s News
The Constitution still thrives, let it show India the way.
India’s Constitution, adopted on November 26, 1949, was largely shaped by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who warned that its success relied on implementation by leaders and the people. He emphasized the interconnectedness of liberty, equality, and fraternity, pointing out ongoing social and economic inequalities despite political equality. Over 75 years, India has made progress, but caste divisions persist. The Constitution has been amended 106 times, but concerns remain about weakening institutions. The focus should now be on reducing mistakes and upholding constitutional values.
The Constitution has always been secular both in spirit and in letter.
In 2016, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh argued that secularism was misused in India, claiming the framers of the Constitution did not include “secular” and “socialist.” However, this is incorrect. Secularism is inherent in the Constitution through provisions ensuring equality, non-discrimination, and religious freedoms. The 42nd Amendment in 1976 added “secular” and “socialist” to the Preamble, highlighting values already embedded in the document. The Supreme Court has ruled that secularism is part of the Constitution’s basic structure and cannot be altered by any temporary majority.
