Plastics treaty draft overlooks key issue: limiting production.

After five days of discussions in Busan, South Korea, countries reached a preliminary draft of the Global Plastics Treaty. However, 67 nations, including the EU and Pacific Island countries, raised concerns that the treaty does not adequately address limiting plastic production, trade, and harmful chemicals in plastic manufacturing. Key disagreements include the EU’s push for global reduction targets and measures for health risks, while countries like Saudi Arabia, China, and India oppose these proposals, citing the importance of polymer production.

Bangladesh’s interim govt. must protect rights of all religious minorities: India.

India urged Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, to protect the rights of religious minorities, dismissing claims of violence against them as “media exaggeration.” India’s Ministry of External Affairs raised concerns over attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s Law Adviser, Asif Nazrul, pointed to incidents against Muslims in India. India also expressed concern over the arrest of ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, urging a fair trial and highlighting ISKCON’s positive global contributions. Bangladesh condemned protests in Kolkata.

Cyclone Fengal to cross Puducherry coast today noon.

Cyclone Fengal is expected to cross the Puducherry coast near Karaikal and Mamallapuram by Saturday afternoon, with wind speeds of 70-80 km/h, gusting up to 90 km/h. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued a red alert for seven coastal Tamil Nadu districts, predicting extremely heavy rainfall. Intense rain is expected in Chennai, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Villupuram, and Kallakurichi. Heavy rainfall will continue in north Tamil Nadu until Saturday, with rain expected in the Western Ghats and interior regions from December 1-3. Orange and yellow alerts have been issued for other districts.

U.P. Governor sets up three-member judicial commission to investigate Sambhal violence

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel formed a three-member commission to investigate the November 24 violence in Sambhal, which resulted in four deaths and numerous injuries. The commission, consisting of retired Justice Devendra Kumar Arora, former IAS officer Amit Mohan Prasad, and former IPS officer Arvind Kumar Jain, has two months to determine whether the violence was spontaneous or planned, assess law enforcement preparedness, and recommend measures to prevent future incidents. The Supreme Court halted the Sambhal trial court’s proceedings. Political parties, including Samajwadi Party and Congress, are sending delegations to investigate.
