Summary of Today’s News

Inflation slowed, yet no relief on food bills

India’s retail inflation dropped to a 10-month low of 4.85% in March, down from 5.1% in February. However, food inflation remained high at 8.52%, with cereals and meat seeing price acceleration, while vegetables, pulses, spices, and eggs maintained double-digit inflation.
Urban consumer inflation decreased from 4.8% in February to 4.14% in March, but rural consumers faced slightly higher inflation at 5.45% in March compared to 5.34% in the previous month.
Food prices rose from 8.3% to 8.6% in rural areas, while urban food inflation dropped from 9.2% to 8.35% in March compared to February.
The Consumer Price Index remained unchanged month-on-month, but the food price index increased by about 0.2%. Economists warn that the ongoing heatwave could lead to a spike in food inflation in the coming months. Rising crude oil prices and potential inflation in the U.S. may delay interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, while high food inflation domestically could further deter rate cuts by India’s central bank.

UCC ensures live-in couples remain safe, says Uttarakhand CM

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, in an exclusive interview with The Hindu, discussed the necessity of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, aligning it with the Indian Constitution. He clarified that the UCC aims to ensure the safety of couples in live-in relationships, not intrude upon their privacy. Mr. Dhami expressed the BJP’s aim to win all five Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming general election, stressing that curbing unethical activities is not targeting any specific community. He concluded by asserting that those who uphold the Constitution will support their actions.

Mother threatened Ghaziabad children, pulled out their nails as her partner raped them.

A 10-year-old girl, escaping her alleged rapist at her mother’s home in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad, was found wandering the streets of Delhi before police rescued her, officials reported Friday.
Both the girl and her 13-year-old brother were victims of repeated rape by their mother’s boyfriend over a year. The perpetrator, along with the woman, was arrested Thursday and charged under Sections 376, 377, and 323 of the Indian Penal Code, as well as provisions of the POCSO Act.
The incident came to light when Delhi Police discovered the girl alone in Sarai Kale Khan on January 29. Initially hesitant, after counseling, she disclosed fleeing Loni, Ghaziabad, following repeated assaults by her mother’s boyfriend.
The case, initially lodged at Sunlight Colony police station in Delhi, was transferred to Ghaziabad Police during investigation. It was revealed that the girl’s elder brother had also fled home a few months prior, working at a local tea stall, following their father’s death during the pandemic, according to ACP (Ankur Vihar) Bhaskar Verma.
Such incidents are the dirtiest spots on the morality and ethical values in the modern society. The sexual desires of modern human beings seem to be monster which engulfs the wisdom, ethical moral values, social responsibilities and ultimately the humanity. The mothers are known for the highest standards of morality for their children but such incidents show the other face of the modern human being which breaches every limits of human conduct.
