What is the significance of the CUET UG exam in the context of undergraduate admissions?

What is the purpose of the CUET exam?

CUET or Common University Entrance Test is a new norm and a method of selection of students into central universities across India who are willing to join such colleges after their 12th class. Earlier, students were selected into prestigious central universities majorly in two ways. Firstly, on the basis of their 12th-class examination results, which was then criticized as arbitrary and biased because different students appear in different 12th Boards such as CBSE, Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE), Haryana Board of School Education (HBSE), etc. and such different boards have their own threshold of awarding the highest marks. In such cases, CBSE is termed to be liberal in awarding a high percentage of marks to students compared to students studying in other boards. Due to this, students coming from different boards were put at an undue disadvantage. Secondly, students were required to give independent exams of each colleges which was burdensome for students as students applying for multiple colleges have to give multiple-specific exams. Hence, because of these issues, and to ensure a level playing field for all the students, the CUET exam has been visualized and adapted for taking admission of students into central universities.

Significance of the CUET UG Exam

Some of the important significance of the CUET UG exam for undergraduate admissions are:

A. Level-playing field for students– Students irrespective of which board they appear for 12th, or what stream they take, every student is provided a level-playing field with the hope of improving fairness in selection criteria and to promote stream-lining in the selection method.

B. Performance-based exam– The CUET exam itself is a competitive exam, majorly independent of the 12th Board’s result. Now students can show their zeal and hard work directly in this exam and may not have to take the stress of 12th exam results.

C. Promotes merit and transparency– The CUET exam focuses more on merit and domain-specific understanding of a subject from the student. This exam has now given students the opportunity to students reflect on their aptitude and topic ability. Moreover, with CUET coming into the picture, transparency in the selection of students has also increased as now everything depends on the rank or score you achieve in the examination.
